Q&A The-MOM.com talks with: Myrthe Mylius
She’s a photographer, red carpet favourite, the girlfriend of Thomas Berge (to her better known as Chiel) and the mom of 2 year old Jack. That’s a mouthful, we know, it makes us wonder what, supermom, Myrthe Mylius can’t do.
How would you describe your own personal style?
Well I got to say that I have 2 different personalities, the mom who likes to dress up and the photographer who doesn’t give a damn as long as I take that million dollar shot. But if I have to give my style a name I would like to call it strong but fun.
As a busy mom how do you combine motherhood with your career?
I just have certain days that I’m a mom and certain days that I’m working… I guess I have to call that a schedule which I am intensely allergic to. But it’s necessary. I’m also extremely lucky with my family and boyfriend. We never wanted to take him to a day care, so the first year it was hard to keep a steady company. But you learn to fight and to just put more hours in a day and make it work :).
If the opportunity of a lifetime presents itself but there’s no way you can balance this with being a fulltime mom, what would you do? Dream job or family?
My family always comes first, without a doubt…. I would be seriously bummed. And it would be hard to accept that I can’t manage, but without a doubt, my family comes first.
What is your guilty pleasure?
Where should i start… Wine, chocolate, hard boiled eggs with lots of mayonnaise… owww french fries with again lots of mayonnaise. I guess I just really like mayonnaise.
Which fashion mom you look at for inspiration?
Not sure, there are a lot of ladies I admire. not only the way they dress but even more how they just do it all. Of course I could mention famous people that look great in press but you know absolutely nothing about them in real life. In my eyes the inspiration is much closer than you think. Take for example my close friend Jamie Faber, single mom, amazing shoe designer and successful business owner… just does it all. Other close friend and awesome stylist Saskia van der Linden…mother of a beautiful son with a great creative mind, who is successful and always wears a great smile on her face. Those are the people who I admire for their energy, love and creativity … that combination it self makes a great mom in my eyes.
What is the best part about being a mom?
I just can’t stop laughing, I really think those little people are here in this world to make ‘big people’ laugh all the time. My son is the most awesome creature with the kindest hart in the world and I enjoy every second of him.
What inspires you most in life and where do you find creativity?
I find creativity everywhere, little things…. colours, people’s stories (as a photographer I have a visual mind, I just think in pictures all day), materials and seasons… colours of leaves, all combined with my mood!
Are there any fun (childhood) traditions that you share with your kids?
Haha well it’s not really a tradition but when I was hurt as a little girl my dad always pretended to be a doctor in a ambulance and called himself ‘Doctor Pipi’ who could fix everything with a band-aid. He would run around the house and make ambulance noises… and just acted really weird. It always made me laugh, when my son got hurt last week I played “doctor pipi” for the first time.
What’s currently on your reading list? Favorite book(s) of all time?
Oh i have to read ‘Down the rabbit hole’ from Holly Madison … not the most intelligent choice 😉 but I got to know about dirty old Hef!
What keeps you relaxed in stressful times? Describe your ultimate Me-time moment.
A glass of white wine, a hot bath or a great show on Netflix.
How do you stay healthy? Are there any beauty and lifestyle tips you would like to share?
Laugh as much as you can.. I truly think that it’s the cure for a lot of bad influences in life.
Is there anything you love to wear but your partner simply hates? And the other way around, is there anything in your partners wardrobe you would love to see mysteriously disappear?
Ha! All the things I hated in his closet are already gone!! He would ask me: “honey, I can’t find my belt”, (with the most ugliest belt buckle you have ever seen… you could literally serve drinks on that thing) and I would just smile and ask if he wanted anything to drink. He is the kindest man I know, always gives me the feeling that I am the prettiest, even when I’m not. After I would see pictures of an event a day before discovering my make up was all wrong and I looked like a homeless drag queen. But that night I felt a million bucks just because he kept telling me how beautiful I looked. I’m lucky, I know.
What is your favorite holiday destination with kids?
Well we spend new years on Curacao, because my boyfriend needs to work there that time of the year. We absolutely love it, we always stay at Lions dive beach resort and spent our days at Hemmingway beach club and just chill. My son plays all day with the other kids and mom finally getting some rest (also: they have THE best Mai Tai there)
A decade ago would you have pictured your life as it is now?
No not at all… especially not this organized life and with something that looks like a schedule
Can you name 10 things (in no particular order) you couldn’t live without?
Jack, Chiel, Jack and Chiel’s kisses and the rest i don’t give a damn about… At least for of course mayonnaise, life would not be as nice without mayonnaise.
What advice would you give working moms who struggle with stress, a busy job, and family, career and time for yourself?
Delegate, don’t be afraid to ask for help and there is no need to get all stressed out. Stress means you spent your time wrong or you don’t have enough time. Both are facts, so do something about it.
Which mom would you like to introduce for the next The-Mom.com talks with and why?
I would say Saskia van der Linden and Jamie Faber because they are awesome, and Christel Metselaars-Terwindt, owner of Mockies.nl. Another person who just does it all. I love her product and her kids always look great and happy. I love to hear her story.
